Top management significantly shapes the company culture. As a leader, you should make mental health a priority in your corporate strategy and occupational health management. Start now by reducing stigma against people with mental health issues. Encourage employees to seek professional help early. Cover the training costs for ensa first aid courses until at least 20% of the workforce is trained in handling mental health issues in the workplace.
  • 2. Mental Health First Aid Conversations for Managers

The earlier the conversation is sought with those affected, the sooner help can be provided. As a manager, you will learn to pay attention to the health of your employees and to recognize and address changes at an early stage. You will practise conducting first aid talks in role plays. Doing the right thing helps to avoid human suffering and high consequential costs.

The earlier, the better, because...

...every second employee will show signs of stress, burnout or other crises at some point in their working life.

...2 out of 3 employees do not receive the necessary support.

...when mental health suffers, work performance soon suffers too - resulting in absenteeism or even job losses.

...an investment in mental health can generate a positive ROI of 2:1. This is mainly achieved through a sustained reduction in sickness absence, lower case management costs and lower staff turnover in the organisation.

...investing in mental health leads to a better working environment and has a positive impact on the company's costs and your attractiveness as an employee.
