Mental Health First Aid: focus Youth

The transition from youth to adulthood is a particularly vulnerable phase for all people. The physical, neurobiological, cognitive and psychological changes that adolescents are subject to can be very challenging. Many master this phase. Others, on the other hand, experience psychological difficulties that have a long-term effect and can have a significant impact on later adult life. It is therefore not surprising that 50% of mental illnesses begin before the age of 18 and 75% before the age of 25. Far too often, the symptoms of mental distress in adolescence are confused with issues related to puberty and not recognized as symptoms of an illness.

Although mental illnesses are common and affect many people, we hardly ever talk about them. Those affected remain silent and hide their suffering, which can worsen their psychological distress and mean illnesses become more severe. This is where ensa can help.

The ensa Mental Health First Aid course Focus Youth is aimed at adults who want to provide first aid to young people (entrusted to their care) with mental health problems: parents, teachers, school social workers, youth group leaders, teachers, etc.

Basic knowledge about the most common mental illnesses and crises of adolescents is taught in a practical way. The participants learn to recognize problems, to address them non-judgementally and to encourage those affected to seek professional help.
